Lex Visas Weekly Immigration Roundup: Key Global Mobility & Immigration Updates | 3rd July 2026

Welcome to this week’s Lex Visas Weekly Immigration Roundup, where we bring you the latest immigration and global mobility developments from across the world. From India’s move towards fully digital OCI services to faster tourist visa approvals in Dubai and expanded visa-free travel options in China, here’s a quick overview of the key policy updates announced this week.

India Introduces New Reporting Requirement for Minors Acquiring Foreign Citizenship

India has introduced a new compliance requirement under the Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Parents or legal guardians are now required to electronically notify the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 30 days if a child residing in India acquires foreign citizenship. The update aims to improve immigration record management and ensure timely compliance with Indian immigration regulations.

India Makes the OCI Application Process Completely Digital

The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially launched the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) system, making the entire OCI application process fully digital. Applicants can now submit applications, upload supporting documents, and download their digital OCI cards online. One of the most significant improvements is that the requirement for re-issuance of the OCI booklet after obtaining a new passport beyond the age of 20 years has been discontinued. Cardholders can now update their passport details online, making the process significantly more convenient.

Japan Revises Visa Fees After Nearly Five Decades

Effective 1 July 2026, Japan has implemented its first major visa fee revision since 1978. Standard visa fees have increased substantially, with single-entry visa charges now set at JPY 15,000. However, Indian nationals remain exempt from this increase and will continue to benefit from the concessional visa fee of INR 500 (excluding applicable VFS service charges), making travel to Japan more affordable for Indian applicants.

UAE Speeds Up Tourist Visa Processing

Dubai has further strengthened its reputation as a traveller-friendly destination by significantly reducing tourist visa processing times. Through enhanced digital systems introduced by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), standard 30-day and 60-day single-entry tourist visas are now typically processed within 48 hours under normal circumstances. This faster turnaround offers greater convenience for leisure travellers and business visitors planning last-minute trips.

United States Launches Optional Fast-Track Visa Interview Service

The U.S. Department of State has introduced an optional USD 750 Fast-Track Visa Service for B-1/B-2 business and tourist visa applicants. As part of a pilot programme running through the latter half of 2026, eligible applicants can secure a consular interview appointment within 10 business days at participating locations. It is important to note that this premium service only accelerates interview scheduling and does not guarantee visa approval or faster application processing after the interview.

China Expands Visa-Free Entry and Transit Benefits

China continues to ease international travel by expanding its 30-day unilateral visa-free entry policy to cover 77 countries, supporting tourism, business travel, and international trade. Additionally, the country has extended its visa-free transit programme from 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days) across more than 60 designated ports for eligible travellers. These measures provide greater flexibility for international visitors and strengthen China’s connectivity with global markets.
